What is the GRE?

What is the GRE Exam?

The Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) Exam is conducted by the ETS. Students who have graduated from an undergraduate college program and are planning to pursue a graduate degree are likely to require a GRE score as an admission requirement. Most colleges in the US as well as some around the world have the GRE Exam as a mandatory criterion for admission into graduate programs.

Why Should you Take the GRE?

As mentioned above, the GRE is likely to be a requirement if you want to study abroad at a graduate (Master’s level or higher) degree program in the US, or in most other English-speaking countries. A good GRE score will make you a better candidate for admission, while the lack of a GRE score might prevent you from being considered as a potential student at all.

How Can you Take the GRE?

Visit our Registration Page to learn more about how to register for the GRE exam. It’s simple, and can be done online, by phone, or by mail.

What’s in the GRE?

The GRE exam consists of 3 sections: the GRE Analytical Writing section, the Quantitative section, and the Verbal section.

The Verbal section contains multiple choice questions in various areas, including Analogies, Antonyms, Sentence Completion and Reading Comprehension. You get 30 minutes to answer 30 questions. This section relies heavily on your knowledge of vocabulary, and is usually considered the harder GRE section.

In the Quantitative Section you get 45 minutes for 28 questions, and will be asked some regular Problem Solving questions, some Quantitative Comparison questions, and a few Data Interpretation questions. This section is based primarily on your knowledge of high-school level mathematics.

The Analytical Writing Section will have you write 2 Essays, a 45-minutes issue task in which you have to compose a regular essay about a given topic, and an argument task in which you’re given 30 minutes to critique the logic behind someone else’s argument.

What GRE Score will you Need?

Please refer to our specific GRE Score Page in order to find out more about good GRE scores. In general, the average on the GRE is about 610/800 in the quantitative section and 470/800 in the verbal one. The writing section is scored separately, and the average on that one is between 4-4.5.
